Obsessions involve repetitive thoughts and compulsions involve repetitive actions or behaviours. Both are generated at an unconscious level and both are normally regarded as involuntary and undesirable.

At one extreme we have a disorder called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD.

OCB is a type of anxiety disorder which takes ordinary concerns to an extreme. Not everyone who has obsessions or compulsions necessarily suffers from OCD

Obsessions
Obsessions are thought based. They present as recurrent, intrusive, illogical and irrational thoughts that keep “popping up” . Examples of obsessive thoughts might include  “my hands are dirty, I must wash again.”  Typical obsessions include fears of dirty surfaces or objects, germs, contamination, and violent or aggressive impulses.

These reoccurring thoughts or fears barge into the mind uninvited.

Scientists theorise that OCD results due to a communication problem between the frontal lobe of the cerebellum , (which controls conscious thought and decision), and the “caudate nucleus”, a part of the “basal ganglia” that acts as a sort of biological relay station by directing and controlling  movement.

The French call Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder  “folie de doute,” or “the doubting disease.” I can’t think of a better description. That’s what they are one single doubt  jammed in an infinite loop of thoughts.

Obsessions often lead to actions or behaviors.

The obsessive thought process may result in a build up of tension that compels the person to perform an action or behavior that releases the tension.

Compulsions and Impulsive Behaviour

Compulsions and impulsive behaviors are commonly mixed up and were recently all grouped under Compulsive behavior.

Both are resultant acts or behaviours which frequently flow from obsessive thoughts.

The American Psychiatric Association defines Compulsivity or compulsions as the “performance of repetitive behaviours with the goal of reducing or preventing anxiety or distress”. This definition specifically excludes the goal of providing pleasure or gratification.

Therefore compulsions result in more anxiety if they are not performed, but don’t result in pleasure of they are performed. Chronic Onychophagia or nail biting is a typical example.

Impulsivity and impulsions are described as a predisposition or tendency toward hasty, unplanned reactions to an internal stimulus or external stimulus
without regard
for negative consequences.

Normally activities are pleasurable in some way such as Gambling addiction or Pornography.

Now we can begin to see the way that the two can overlap. A drug addict can begin to use drugs impulsively, however once that they have built up a tolerance to the effects of the drug they may become compulsive as the use of the drug only alleviates the anxiety and discomfort of not using.

What is a habit?
A habit is a behaviour which is frequently repeated in a certain context or in reaction to a certain stimulus. The more it happens the stronger the neural pathways and connections become.

The stronger the connections the easier it becomes to perform the habit.
Habits are sometimes goal directed but because or unintended associations they can also work against the very purpose for which they developed.

In NLP terms we say that “Every Behaviour Seeks a Positive Outcome” At some level habits’ either had a positive intention and purpose, or we thought that they did.

Habits can become very strong and extremely hard to break.

We are taught early on in hypnotherapy that Thoughts become things and that
The mind affects the body.

These two principles are central to how we help our clients manage and sometimes permanently clear these issues of habits, compulsions, impulses and obsessions.

In summary:
Obsessions
are thoughts, they may lead to impulsive and or compulsive behaviour.
Impulsive
behaviour seeks a pleasurable although sometimes reckless outcome
Compulsive
behavior is repetitive in nature and seeks to reduce tension or anxiety and rarely leads to pleasure.
Habits
are repetitive responses and may share compulsive and impulsive characteristics but do not involve obsessive thoughts.

Why Do We Develop These Habits and Behaviours?
Everybody can learn a habit, it’s a human condition to learn.
In fact in NLP, one of the main beliefs or presuppositions of NLP is that we “cant not learn”

Do something enough times and you will strengthen the neuronal pathways of the nervous system which will make it easier and more automatic to do again.
If you “Learn” to manage stress by biting your nails then you may find it easier and easier to do that in stressful situations.

If we didn’t have this ability to learn new things and skills then we would not be able to survive.

To make this simpler think about learning to drive a car, if you can’t drive a car then perhaps you could think about learning to ride a bicycle.
Once you have learned the skill it’s very difficult to unlearn it.
Habits are therefore vital for survival, we just need to learn how to manage them.

How does hypnotherapy and NLP work?
Willpower does not work, you may have already experienced the frustration of knowing that you are performing a habit and being powerless to do anything about it

Sometimes obsessing becomes a type of meditation. Something that we can that relieves the stress.

Hypnotherapy and NLP work with the unconscious mind which is where these urges come from. You have learned these responses and if you learned one thing it means that you can learn something else.

What can you do when Trying to stop obviously doesn’t work?

You know you should not do it, but that knowing makes no difference at all. That’s why so many people are still smoking and eating compulsively although there are easy techniques which can help within a few hours. “Trying” is not one of them!

We often refer to the concept of the “law of reversed effect”, The more you try to do something the harder it becomes.

Hypnotherapy and NLP therapy work on a number of areas:

  • Changing habits and giving your unconscious mind alternatives to the unwanted behaviour
  • Creating a well formed outcome and a compelling future with visualisations.
  • Creating alternative options for responses to stress.
  • Distraction, relaxation and anchoring techniques.

More advanced techniques may involve

  • Regression to cause
  • Parts Therapy
  • Timeline Therapy
  • Authentic Self Empowerment
